Career Summary

More than two decades of technology innovation and leadership, both working within corporations and serving as a high level consultant to senior management and IT organizations. Having created software and applications (for which patents have been awarded), I have also led large teams (up to 200 people), managed significant budgets (in excess of $50MM) and directed major capital projects (upwards of $80MM). ). As an entrepreneur I have been the CTO/founder of a leading edge startups, and a consultant to VCs and the CEOs and CxOs of numerous web 2.0 startups.

Accomplishments

  • Founded Tweettronics.com, an early Twitter application focused on social media metrics and tracking. Act as CEO and provide all systems architecture and software, oversee cloud management, biz dev, partnership negotiation, and so forth.
  • For Meemli.com, an innovative social networking startup, I served as CTO: managing staff; doing all technology strategy, architecture, and coding; raising money; and bootstrapping an early stage startup.
  • Performing numerous technical due diligence and CTO consulting assignments on behalf of VCs and CEOs for investment assessment, and M&A. Clients include Investor Growth Capital with 1.5bil invested.
  • For many current Startups I am the consulting CTO, responsible for all strategic and tactical technology matters, ranging from team building to hands-on coding, architecture, and operations, to marketing, product, and technology strategy, to planning, projects, and budgets

  • For Liberty Travel (2005-2006) (Liberty Travel and Travel Agents), one the nation’s largest travel companies with $1.8b gross revenue, was the CIO and managed a staff of 200 and budget of $50MM in a two-year consulting assignment aimed at assisting the sale of Liberty Travel
    • - Revamped technology strategy
    • - Re-organized staffing
    • - Hired CTO, VP engineering and Director of Projects
    • - Fixed projects to be on-time, under budget
    • - Represented technology to buyers through Lehman Brothers

  • Founded (1999) Inventivity LLC, a  Strategic Technology & Management Consultancy. Among completed assignments are:
    •  - For Scient/Razorfish acted as Project CTO for it's largest client, $3.5b Hewitt Associates www.hewitt.com. Created technology strategy, then managed and built engineering team, and developed the systems architecture of a B2C site scaled to 20 millions users. Built overall technology team of 70 and managed 35 engineers.
    •  - For Rio Audio (now www.sandisk.com), the No. 2 maker of MP3 players, as Product and Engineering Manager.  Managed and delivered outsourced development of iTunes plug-in for Rio products. Managed product, branding, budget, strategy and plans for innovative product for Music search and purchase.
    •  - For Sonic Solutions, world leader in DVD technology, managed product entry into Consumer Electronics space.  Directed multiple engineering projects, consumer electronics deliveries to customers Sony and Hitachi. Led senior corporate executives to focus on improving company-wide engineering processes and instigated a variety of initiatives that yielded measurable and rapid ROI for three business units, involving 75 engineers located globally. Implemented first outsourced development projects. Served as Linux consultant for the port of its strategic codebase from Windows.
    •  - For Inxight Inc, served as CTO/Systems Architect for next generation, state of art Search technology for NASA. Developed architecture for large-scale, search systems using taxonomies, NLP and automatic generated metadata.
    •  - Additional assignments include:
      - Product Managementof plans and development of a Linux & Microsoft software development product for FSMLabs
      - Product Manager/Architect of product planning, design, architecture, and coding of Windows & Web-based RSS Editor for financial and investment industry for stealth startup company

Corporate History

Acuson/Siemens (1996-99):  Engineering Manager // Project Manager // Researcher.

  • Invented, delivered, and patented web-based medical imaging product using Apache, CGI and Java. Work done directly for John Chambers, CEO of Cisco, to demonstrate the product to then Vice President Al Gore. 
  • Authored patents and researched ultrasound imaging techniques, web, AI and voice interface technologies. Managed 12 engineers and was architect and technical lead of TCP/IP based network software (DICOM) portable to Windows, Unix, and Mac in C++.
  • Directed development of software and hardware medical products that meet ISO 900x and TUV standards.
  • Lead architect of Mac, Unix and Windows portable software.
  • Led several company-wide strategic engineering investigations to reduce costs and produce efficiencies.

NYNEX/Verizon (1993-1996): Engineering Manager: Systems Architecture (as an Independent Contractor)

  • Managed Systems Architecture for residential telephone billing system for company’s largest territory (the entire Northeast U.S).

New Tools, Inc. (1991-94): CTO, Founder

  • Invented the first full, drag-and-drop, iconic interface for Windows
  • Products recommended by PC Magazine (on the cover), PC World, etc. and featured in books including “Killer Windows Apps”
  • Brought app to market (as “Aporia” and “WinTools”)
  • Raised angel and VC funds
  • Built and managed engineering teams
  • Negotiated publishing deals.
